Another chapter that's interesting, but didn't quite happen the way I had hoped.

The 800 Mile Commute

Hire Me

Why You Should Hire Me – I ADD VALUE

First and foremost, you may notice that I have a lot of energy, and tend to keep a positive outlook on things. I’m able to see big-picture and analyze a lot of options at once. I’m rarely caught unawares. I make the best of any situation, and am able to put a positive spin on things, for myself and my team.

I am a motivator. My management style is “first among equals.” I’m sort of the opposite of the Newt Gingrich “I can do your jobs better than any of you and that’s why I’m the leader” approach. I recognize and celebrate that we all have different strengths, and try to play to those strengths. That gives everyone their moment to shine. I don’t need to take anyone else’s credit – if my team does well, then we all look good.

Wherever I’ve worked, I’ve always taken on additional responsibilities. When I managed an airline, I also wrote the customer service and baggage handling manuals, did my own training, and represented the airline at hiring fairs. I also wrote an internal newsletter keeping everyone, from the part-time agent to the CEO, informed on what was going on with the company. When I managed a restaurant, I did a lot of my own marketing, and corporate picked up my marketing and asked me to market the entire region.

At the inbound call center I managed, I created metrics for the team so we could compare our team’s strengths and opportunities, and wrote the training manuals to help everyone perform better. I also discovered a dormant upsell program on the AS400 system we were using, and implemented it, making the company over $1 million in the first year we used it.

I’ve been married 24 years. When I find a good thing, I stay with it. I’m not interested in flitting about - I’m looking for a career. Prior to 9/11, I had been in travel and the airlines for more than a decade. Between then and now, I managed in a number of different capacities, and acquired my Masters of Information Technology and Operations Management degree at the top of my class. I’m ready to work.

Where You Should Put Me – I ADD STRENGTH

Customer-facing. You definitely want me as your face, whether it’s as a client manager, dealing with your external customers, or as your general manager dealing with our internal customers. I operate not as a “cheerleader” but an advocate for my company, ready to push the positives and strengths, ready to listen to and work on our weaknesses, ready to position us to seize our opportunities, and proactively dealing with our threats. If we inconvenience a customer, I’ll fix it personally, and follow-up personally.

Slaying dragons. Give me your challenges. If you’re a small company and need to hire someone who is willing to learn and do everything at one point or another, I’m all in. If you’re a growing company that needs someone to put out a thousand fires that we haven’t even thought of yet, I’ll map the way. If you’re on a downward trend, I’ll work tirelessly to plug the holes, woo back the customers, and right the course. If your department needs a strong voice to rally the troops and move on to the next level, put me on the front lines and let’s do it.

A good example. I’m on-time, dressed and ready for action. I’m not perfect, and am willing to admit it. Rather than burying mistakes, I prefer to acknowledge them myself, use them as a learning tool, and not make them twice. The same applies with my team. If a mistake is made, but the reasoning behind the decision was sound, we’ll work together to fix any issues, then make sure that the team is stronger for the experience.

Whatever it takes. Folks, I drive 13 hours to work a 12 hour shift, twice a week. I don’t turn into a pumpkin at 5pm, shy away from working weekends or holidays, or have any fear or traveling. I know how to delegate, so I’m no martyr, working until 2am because I don’t trust other people to get the job done. But you’ll’ never see me leaving at 5pm after asking my team to stay and work later than I am willing to. I’m first on the scene and last to turn out the lights.

Bringing the skills. My Bachelors is in Business Administration, and my Masters is in Information Technology and Operations Management. I am a subject matter expert in Sabre, was a beta-tester and certified consultant for Apple and Microsoft, have started two successful businesses, and have written the business plans for countless others. I have worked in television and radio, in front of and behind the camera, and managed teams from five to over four hundred.

I’m on sale. Call me 919-698-5504 or write me david@gso300.com. I’m back living in my hometown of Chicagoland and am ready for a challenge. But I can’t wait around forever – these tires probably only have about six more 1,600 mile round-trips in them. Let’s talk.

Plan C was to live in Chicago and keep my job in Raleigh, North Carolina. Surely it wouldn't come to that, right?
